“The Greatest Weapon Against Stress Is…”

“…Our ability to choose one thought over another.” – William James

Choose a simple thought. And make your mind think it. Say it out loud if that helps. Whisper it to yourself if need be. Try this: ‘I control my thoughts.’ Say it over and over and over until you start to feel the calm. It will come. If you force out anything else, just say those words, you’ll feel it. The anger will ebb. The tears will subside. The breathing will steady. The body will relax. The emotions will not feel so raw and exposed. You’ll be amazed. I was!

I’m going through a period of reconstruction in my life right now. Trying a new path. The problem is, I need the old job, solely for the income it provides (and it provides little else)!! I have minimal tasks to complete, very little work, and the people in this particular office are exceptionally abysmal. Truly. So, recently, I’ve spent A LOT of time crying. It’s freaking exhausting!!! And you know what? It doesn’t help. I’m not saying that a good cry once in a while isn’t cathartic, but damn!! It tenses me up, gives me a headache, and ultimately, leaves me feeling all wrung out; like a filthy wet rag. I tried this exercise. This morning, as a matter of fact. It worked. I didn’t cry this morning, (it’s become part of my morning routine). [eye-roll].

I sat with my coffee and I simply kept telling myself; ‘Katie, you control your thoughts. You control your thoughts.’ And if nothing else, it prevented me from spending those precious minutes worrying about what the day would bring, how’d I deal with the weirdos at work, what I’d say when asking (yet again) if anyone had any work for me to do, and when I’d finally get up the courage to ask my father for the loan I so desperately need in order to stay in massage school.

Your new mantra: ” I control my thoughts.” There’s one more thing, I feel I feel I should add; breathe!!!!! It’s really important (duh, I know), but just do it actively. As you’re saying your new mantra, focus on your breathe. Maybe even time the mantra to the breath. Breathe in, and say I control my thoughts; breathe out and say I control my thoughts. And be prepared for a miracle!!!

Peace, Love and Light

“I Can’t Change the Direction of the Wind….”

“…But I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” – Jimmy Dean

Anything less then adjusting to what is, rather than what you thought might be, is just an excuse.  So here’s a simple strategy to try.  When you find yourself saying that you can’t, ask yourself if you really can’t, or if it’s that you don’t want to.  You’ll be amazed at the amount of freedom that comes from realizing that you actually can, that you’re totally capable, that you could summon the resources;but you don’t have to, because you really don’t want to.  And if you want to, or if you want something bad enough, you’ll find the strength to adjust your sails, no matter the cost.

Childhood Treasures

I don’t remember being happy a lot as a child.  I actually don’t have lots of memories from childhood.  Apparently trauma can do that to you.  But I do know, that one thing that always, always, always made me happy (and still does) is being at the shore, picking up “treasures.”  Shells, rocks, drift wood, beach glass, dried out crab shells; you name it, and I picked it up and examined it very closely to see if it was a worthy treasure.

P.S. – They usually all were!!

Now I’m turning those happy childhood memories into wearable art.  I’ve begun picking some of my favorite piece of sea glass and wire-wrapping them to hang on all different types of necklaces.

Ebb and Flow like the sea ~ as it flows, so does life.

Feel the power of the ocean ~ It’s the same power in your mind ~ Energy ~ It can sweep you up or pull you under.

Wear these pieces as a reminder of the sea, of it’s power, of your power.  Give as a gift to someone who also grew up along the New England coast and would treasure my treasure for all their own reasons!

Meditation Made Quick and Simple

Because, honestly, the whole point is to relax.  So if you’re all crazy and thinking ‘ugh, i don’t have a half hour to stand on my head and pray to the moon god,’ then that’s not really helping you out, is it?  No.

Meditation has been a relaxation technique handed down through the centuries. It’s gained popularity today in our Western culture due to extreme “life” overload.  Too many minivans, soccer games, sick parents, iPhones, start-up companies and floods of media hype.  Too much of the American Dream will kill ya.  So says I.  Some may disagree.  But if you’re here, and you’re interested in meditating, then you might be nodding along; or at least acknowledging that we’re all super stressed, super crazed and living in hyper drive trying to have it all.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have it all.  But I’ve decided that my “having it all” has very little to do with worrying about what anyone else has.  I read a quote on Instagram the other day, and I can’t give anyone credit because I could never find it again ( media overload much?!?).  It was to the effect that ‘ I used to admire people who had money and things and now I admire people who have inner peace.’  Something like that.  You get the gist.  It’s true.  My having it all has to do with calm, peace, happiness and bringing love and light into the world.  That’s my goal.

Now, I need money to pay for my iPhone (because I am still subject to their genius advertising and superior technology), and my car and my food, etc.  But I no longer sacrifice my time, my happiness or my well-being to earn more than what I need.

I’m getting off the point here.  Meditating. Made simple.  Here we go – it’s kind of a big secret I’m about to let you in on.

P.S. – I’m joking.

Here it is.  5 minutes.  I know men who spend longer in the bathroom with a Playboy or their Instagram feed.  So no one is allowed to say they don’t have 5 minutes.

Take 5 minutes.  Sit, stand, lean; whatever you are comfortable with, because the point is to…… what now?  Relax!  You got it.

So take 5 minutes, every day.  Closing your eyes is usually helpful because it forces you to block out distractions.  I like to find a quiet place, but if you can’t find one, chances are you’ve been living in chaos for so long that you can block out the sounds around you.  And while you are giving yourself these 5 minutes (they are a gift), think about nothing, a purple lamp, an elephant, anything that brings a smile to your lips.  I find that if you have a phrase to repeat, it can help too.  Any tool that can keep your mind quiet and centered for those 5 minutes. Sometimes holding something in your hand can help keep your mind focused (ADD spinners in classrooms????)  Anyway, sometimes I hold a stone or even a random object.

Breathe.  This is the second part of the secret to meditation.  Tell yourself, ‘I’m breathing.’  Don’t laugh.  Or do, maybe that will help you.  But if you tell yourself ‘I’m breathing in, and I’m breathing out’ you are much more likely to feel the benefits of the deep breaths.  Why do you think they teach pregnant women and those suffering from panic attacks (much like those about to give birth I imagine) how to breathe deep?  Because it is an amazingly powerful tool for calming and relaxing.

Try this, every day, for a week.  You will be amazed at how great you feel after just 5 minutes.  Your mind and your body will feel refreshed and rejuvenated.  Ready to take on the rest of the day!

This Blue Agate (a stone known for it’s calming and soothing metaphysical properties) bracelet would be a perfect way to remind yourself to spend 5 minutes everyday just tuning  into you.  Because, you’re worth it!

Thank you for reading 🙂

Blue for Change

Blue Aventurine –  “It provides better focus and concentration, and lends the courage needed to take an honest look at how one’s thoughts and actions have affected their current reality, and how best to move forward in improving or continuing those patterns. By accepting responsibility for one’s own life, it makes it possible to reclaim personal power and bring about one’s own emotional healing and well-being. [Ahsian, 57]” –

How many of you have read the book “The Secret”?  I love it, it’s one of my favorites.  I go back to it frequently.  I have dog-eared many of the pages as those are places I struggle and need to refer back to.

One of the things I like about it is that it immediately gives me a good feeling inside.  I don’t really know how to put it into words.  But it’s like warm, nice, good, positive and inspired.  Except that none of those words does the feeling justice.  But if you’ve read it, and if you loved it, chances are you know the feeling I’m talking about here.  Just a general feeling of well-being mingled with hope.

The first thing I notice, just picking up the book, is that I feel happier.  Knowing someone out there believes there is something better in store for me, and knowing that this person believes it is all within MY power to bring these good things toward me.

So, we get the idea, believing in the positive will bring more positive to you.  Believing you can, almost ensures that you will.  I love that.

Okay, so now let’s bring this concept home.  I swear, this idea was totally straight-forward in my head!

Let’s pull some relevant and important things from that quote (love that site, by the way, super informative!).   “how one’s thoughts and actions have affected their current reality.”  That’s a biggie.  If we can wrap our heads around the idea that what we are right now, job, lifestyle, financial status, etc.; these are all a result of the thoughts we’ve had up until this very moment.  And if we are looking around and seeing that we are completely satisfied, then we’re doing some darn good thinking!  Buuutttt…….. if we are looking around and saying ‘ugh, seriously, this, again..’  It’s time to make some changes in our thoughts!!

The best way to remember to catch yourself and change your thinking, in my humble opinion, is to keep reminders around.  But, if you’re like me, and you don’t like clutter, notes and stickies and crap everywhere WILL NOT WORK.  But, I can share what works for me; jewelry.  Yes, I know, I’m a girl and I like jewelry, big surprise, right?  Well, I am always drawn to jewelry, but these days I am drawn to jewelry with intention and purpose.

Take this hand-knotted Mala for example.  Made from Blue Aventurine gemstones.  (Yes, I made it, and yes, I am selling it).  But give me one second more to explain how I believe (and would genuinely love) for it to help.

If you believe that you are responsible for your own life.  And, you want to make changes to your situation via your thoughts.  What better way to remind yourself of the new thoughts then to WEAR a catalyst for change around your neck or wrist??  Every time you look down or feel the weight of the beads, you’ll tap into their energy.  Energy which, when combined with your own energy (thoughts resonating at a frequency of change), will power you forward into a new life!

Okay, it’s not really that simple.  But I’ve simplified it to make a point.  If you believe in the power of thoughts, and you want to make changes in your life, then you know you have to change your thinking.  You also know that you will slip up occasionally; revert back to old patterns and ways of thinking.  You may or may not catch yourself.  Why not wear jewelry that can help you remember?  Aren’t you going to wear jewelry anyway?  Wouldn’t jewelry with intention serve multiple purposes? A post-it note stuck in a prominent place is good.  So is a rubber band around the wrist.  We’ve all heard that trick, where you slap yourself with it when you feel yourself going off track.  I’ve tried it, and I hate it!

I can honestly say, that after I purchased my first worry stone (amethyst, to help with OCD), just having it in my pocket, feeling it’s weight, helped me stay focused, positive and present with my intentions for change.  Was it the stone? Was it me?  Was it both our energies?  I think so 🙂

Let Go of Depression; One Simple Technique

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right” – Henry Ford

I truly believe this.  Our minds are so powerful.  We can achieve or not, anything we believe.

This leads me to the healing power of a druzy crystal. Druzy is believed to have some wonderful metaphysical properties; enhancing relaxation, promoting creativity and helping to heal emotional issues, just to name a few.

This remarkable stone is thought to amplify our body’s natural healing powers and purify while strengthening our spirits.  It is said to help provide balance necessary to avoid depression.  Also it helps to keep at bay any unnatural feelings of fear or dread.

Wearing a druzy stone can help you relax.  Reducing your stress levels, and lowering the levels of cortisol in your body.  Many believe this powerful stone will help it’s wearer to find their own inner light by unblocking energies within the body.

It is not surprising then that this stone is used to heal many mental and emotional issues.

If you believe in these ideas surrounding the Druzy stone, your mind will guide you toward healing.  Whether the power lies in the stone, or in your mind, does it matter?  If wearing a druzy pendant helps you believe you are overcoming depression, healing your past, and looking toward a brighter future, then is it not your own belief that is guiding your thoughts and decision?

  • change your thinking
  • change your beliefs
  • it’s not easy
  • wear a reminder
  • druzy pendants are harbingers of good vibes

Find Your Om

Well, let’s just jump right in!

How do you relax your mind? When you’re so stressed out that you can’t see straight, what do you do to get yourself centered and focused and calm?  Do you do anything at all?  If you said no, you’re not alone.  In fact, you’re probably in the majority.

Did you know that constant stress can lead to diabetes? Type I, the real kind, where your pancreas actually STOPS working.  Yeah, it can happen.  Elevated levels of stress lead to elevated blood sugar levels.  Elevated blood sugar levels means that your pancreaus is working overtime to produce insulin to bring those levels down to the safe zone.  Like any other organ in your body, the pancreaus can get worn out.

Most of us are aware of what chronic stress can do to us.  So, let me tell you something you may not have already known, you’re probably stressed out right now!

So many of us are in a constant state of stress, we don’t even realize it anymore.  So let me ask another question.  How often do you simply sit still? Not when you’re going to bed, or waiting at a red light; no, those don’t count.  I want to know how often you consciously sit still.  I’ll bet it’s not very often.  There’s probably some of you who can’t even say when the last time was.
