Meditation Made Quick and Simple

Because, honestly, the whole point is to relax.  So if you’re all crazy and thinking ‘ugh, i don’t have a half hour to stand on my head and pray to the moon god,’ then that’s not really helping you out, is it?  No.

Meditation has been a relaxation technique handed down through the centuries. It’s gained popularity today in our Western culture due to extreme “life” overload.  Too many minivans, soccer games, sick parents, iPhones, start-up companies and floods of media hype.  Too much of the American Dream will kill ya.  So says I.  Some may disagree.  But if you’re here, and you’re interested in meditating, then you might be nodding along; or at least acknowledging that we’re all super stressed, super crazed and living in hyper drive trying to have it all.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have it all.  But I’ve decided that my “having it all” has very little to do with worrying about what anyone else has.  I read a quote on Instagram the other day, and I can’t give anyone credit because I could never find it again ( media overload much?!?).  It was to the effect that ‘ I used to admire people who had money and things and now I admire people who have inner peace.’  Something like that.  You get the gist.  It’s true.  My having it all has to do with calm, peace, happiness and bringing love and light into the world.  That’s my goal.

Now, I need money to pay for my iPhone (because I am still subject to their genius advertising and superior technology), and my car and my food, etc.  But I no longer sacrifice my time, my happiness or my well-being to earn more than what I need.

I’m getting off the point here.  Meditating. Made simple.  Here we go – it’s kind of a big secret I’m about to let you in on.

P.S. – I’m joking.

Here it is.  5 minutes.  I know men who spend longer in the bathroom with a Playboy or their Instagram feed.  So no one is allowed to say they don’t have 5 minutes.

Take 5 minutes.  Sit, stand, lean; whatever you are comfortable with, because the point is to…… what now?  Relax!  You got it.

So take 5 minutes, every day.  Closing your eyes is usually helpful because it forces you to block out distractions.  I like to find a quiet place, but if you can’t find one, chances are you’ve been living in chaos for so long that you can block out the sounds around you.  And while you are giving yourself these 5 minutes (they are a gift), think about nothing, a purple lamp, an elephant, anything that brings a smile to your lips.  I find that if you have a phrase to repeat, it can help too.  Any tool that can keep your mind quiet and centered for those 5 minutes. Sometimes holding something in your hand can help keep your mind focused (ADD spinners in classrooms????)  Anyway, sometimes I hold a stone or even a random object.

Breathe.  This is the second part of the secret to meditation.  Tell yourself, ‘I’m breathing.’  Don’t laugh.  Or do, maybe that will help you.  But if you tell yourself ‘I’m breathing in, and I’m breathing out’ you are much more likely to feel the benefits of the deep breaths.  Why do you think they teach pregnant women and those suffering from panic attacks (much like those about to give birth I imagine) how to breathe deep?  Because it is an amazingly powerful tool for calming and relaxing.

Try this, every day, for a week.  You will be amazed at how great you feel after just 5 minutes.  Your mind and your body will feel refreshed and rejuvenated.  Ready to take on the rest of the day!

This Blue Agate (a stone known for it’s calming and soothing metaphysical properties) bracelet would be a perfect way to remind yourself to spend 5 minutes everyday just tuning  into you.  Because, you’re worth it!

Thank you for reading 🙂

Blue for Change

Blue Aventurine –  “It provides better focus and concentration, and lends the courage needed to take an honest look at how one’s thoughts and actions have affected their current reality, and how best to move forward in improving or continuing those patterns. By accepting responsibility for one’s own life, it makes it possible to reclaim personal power and bring about one’s own emotional healing and well-being. [Ahsian, 57]” – CrystalVaults.com

How many of you have read the book “The Secret”?  I love it, it’s one of my favorites.  I go back to it frequently.  I have dog-eared many of the pages as those are places I struggle and need to refer back to.

One of the things I like about it is that it immediately gives me a good feeling inside.  I don’t really know how to put it into words.  But it’s like warm, nice, good, positive and inspired.  Except that none of those words does the feeling justice.  But if you’ve read it, and if you loved it, chances are you know the feeling I’m talking about here.  Just a general feeling of well-being mingled with hope.

The first thing I notice, just picking up the book, is that I feel happier.  Knowing someone out there believes there is something better in store for me, and knowing that this person believes it is all within MY power to bring these good things toward me.

So, we get the idea, believing in the positive will bring more positive to you.  Believing you can, almost ensures that you will.  I love that.

Okay, so now let’s bring this concept home.  I swear, this idea was totally straight-forward in my head!

Let’s pull some relevant and important things from that quote (love that site, by the way, super informative!).   “how one’s thoughts and actions have affected their current reality.”  That’s a biggie.  If we can wrap our heads around the idea that what we are right now, job, lifestyle, financial status, etc.; these are all a result of the thoughts we’ve had up until this very moment.  And if we are looking around and seeing that we are completely satisfied, then we’re doing some darn good thinking!  Buuutttt…….. if we are looking around and saying ‘ugh, seriously, this, again..’  It’s time to make some changes in our thoughts!!

The best way to remember to catch yourself and change your thinking, in my humble opinion, is to keep reminders around.  But, if you’re like me, and you don’t like clutter, notes and stickies and crap everywhere WILL NOT WORK.  But, I can share what works for me; jewelry.  Yes, I know, I’m a girl and I like jewelry, big surprise, right?  Well, I am always drawn to jewelry, but these days I am drawn to jewelry with intention and purpose.

Take this hand-knotted Mala for example.  Made from Blue Aventurine gemstones.  (Yes, I made it, and yes, I am selling it).  But give me one second more to explain how I believe (and would genuinely love) for it to help.

If you believe that you are responsible for your own life.  And, you want to make changes to your situation via your thoughts.  What better way to remind yourself of the new thoughts then to WEAR a catalyst for change around your neck or wrist??  Every time you look down or feel the weight of the beads, you’ll tap into their energy.  Energy which, when combined with your own energy (thoughts resonating at a frequency of change), will power you forward into a new life!

Okay, it’s not really that simple.  But I’ve simplified it to make a point.  If you believe in the power of thoughts, and you want to make changes in your life, then you know you have to change your thinking.  You also know that you will slip up occasionally; revert back to old patterns and ways of thinking.  You may or may not catch yourself.  Why not wear jewelry that can help you remember?  Aren’t you going to wear jewelry anyway?  Wouldn’t jewelry with intention serve multiple purposes? A post-it note stuck in a prominent place is good.  So is a rubber band around the wrist.  We’ve all heard that trick, where you slap yourself with it when you feel yourself going off track.  I’ve tried it, and I hate it!

I can honestly say, that after I purchased my first worry stone (amethyst, to help with OCD), just having it in my pocket, feeling it’s weight, helped me stay focused, positive and present with my intentions for change.  Was it the stone? Was it me?  Was it both our energies?  I think so 🙂
